A fraud alert allows creditors to get a copy of your credit report only if they take steps to verify your identity. If you are very worried, you can choose to place a \u201ccredit freeze\u201d on your account; however, be aware that a credit freeze will lock your credit and may impair your ability to get credit if you need access to money quickly, such as when an emergency arises. Filing early is your best defense against tax-related identity theft.
